what the heck is a mashup?

Mashups are two or more songs recombined in a creative way to create a new composition. Mashups often rely on unexpected juxtapositions of dissimilar artists.

I am interviewing some of the most innovative and influential contemporary mashup producers. The thesis I am writing will be documentation of mashup culture in a comprehensive, new way. I am examining how mashups have become mainstream as well as what some of the most challenging artists are doing with the medium today.
